A little reading to begin with

A SAMPLE FROM CHAPTER ONE

Name what you need to do with the material. Reading a passage, interpreting a chart and finding an assessment condition involve different information. Identify the part that is difficult to access or use rather than describing the whole subject as impossible. A specific task gives support staff a clearer starting point.

Describe what happens when you try. The text may be an image rather than selectable text; the reading order may move between columns; a diagram may lack an explanation. These are observations, not diagnoses of the file or of yourself. Record the page or section and the ordinary feature you used, without claiming to know the technical cause before it is checked.

Distinguish a format barrier from a content question. You may be able to read the words but not understand an unfamiliar concept, in which case a tutor's explanation may help. You may also understand the concept while being unable to use the provided format. Both needs can be real, and naming them separately avoids sending the question to an unsuitable route.

Ask what result an alternative must preserve. A material's definitions, examples and conditions may matter to the learning task. If you need an assessment instruction, its exact meaning must remain under the provider's authority. Do not assume a shorter or more pleasant version is equivalent merely because it is easier to read.
