A SAMPLE FROM CHAPTER ONE

Choose a new empty folder for this exercise in a location you may use. Name it Restore Practice and create three distinct child folders: Working, Backup and Restored. If a folder with that name already contains material, choose a new unique name rather than reusing or clearing it. Keep all three within the new practice space.

In a plain-text editor, create a fresh note containing a first line Restore practice and a second line Version one. Save it as practice-note.txt inside Working, then close the editor normally. Confirm the full folder path and file name through the file manager. Do not substitute a real document or an existing file with the same name.

File extensions and file-manager views can be displayed differently depending on settings. Check that this is the intended plain-text note, not a shortcut or another format. The editor and saved encoding can affect its bytes. You do not need to match the tested fixture's exact byte count to learn the process, but you must keep the same saved practice file as the comparison source.

These locations have distinct roles. Working will change, Backup holds the chosen saved state and Restored is the destination for recovering that state. Nothing is deleted to simulate loss. A separate destination protects the edited working version and lets you inspect both. The folder arrangement is for learning only: all three can fail together if their one device fails. Establish this boundary before copying so the exercise cannot quietly become a destructive attempt on actual work.
