A little reading to begin with

A SAMPLE FROM CHAPTER ONE

Describe who the result is for, what it should do and what will count as finished. A family photo book has a different brief from a public exhibition. Include the size and format before collecting materials.

Ask why you want to do the project. Enjoyment, learning and a useful result can all be legitimate purposes. Do not automatically add publication, income or public approval. The brief should make decisions easier during the work. If a new feature does not serve the purpose, it can belong to another version rather than quietly entering this one. Keep the first result small enough to complete with your actual resources.

Include one boundary about what this version will not attempt. That might be a limited period of family history or one kind of craft result. The boundary should clarify scope, not hide an unmet obligation. It lets you recognise additions without having to reject every new idea permanently.
