A little reading to begin with

A SAMPLE FROM CHAPTER ONE

Begin by naming what an opportunity lets the rabbit do. Exploration, movement, retreat and appropriate engagement with its surroundings are more meaningful descriptions than a brand name or toy count. Ask what function is present in the existing environment and whether the animal can use it. An object that looks interesting to a person may offer little useful activity, or may introduce a problem that the photograph does not show.

Distinguish enrichment from essential care. A new accessory does not compensate for inadequate space, unsuitable housing, missing food or water, or unresolved health concerns. Suitable social arrangements also require competent planning; a person cannot solve that need by placing unfamiliar rabbits together. Keep basic welfare and veterinary requirements central. This guide concerns opportunities within an already appropriate arrangement, rather than a recipe for creating that arrangement or a promise that stimulation can overcome any limitation.

Use a small opportunity map for thinking, not a welfare score. In one column name the possible activity; in another describe how the rabbit could choose it and leave it. An unanswered material or access question is a reason to seek appropriate advice before adding anything. You might discover that the useful first step is restoring an unobstructed familiar route instead of buying another product. The goal is a clearer understanding of what the environment offers. It is not to fill every moment with entertainment, judge a carer's worth by the number of accessories or claim that a checklist establishes the animal's wellbeing.
