A little reading to begin with

A SAMPLE FROM CHAPTER ONE

Select one ordinary interaction relevant to a practical question. You may want to understand what information an appropriate adult or professional needs about a familiar activity. Keep the observation small rather than tracking every action across the day. A broad aim to decode behaviour invites conclusions that the note cannot support. The purpose is to describe what happened and where your understanding stops, not to prove a communication ability or assign a developmental label.

Identify the legitimate role you have in the child's care and the actual context of the interaction. Do not observe another child privately or gather information beyond your appropriate responsibility. Keep established support arrangements intact. If the child already uses a communication method or tool, follow the actual relevant guidance rather than changing it to create a clearer test. This manuscript provides no clinical observation protocol or authority to undertake an assessment.

Write the limited question before recording the moment. It might concern a specific misunderstanding in an ordinary activity and what clarification would be useful. Avoid a question that already assumes the child was uncooperative or that one action proves a hidden feeling. Use invented material if the actual situation is sensitive. The first output is a purpose note with a clear boundary: one event, appropriate responsibility and an unresolved question. That boundary makes the record more respectful and useful than a large log intended to explain the child's whole personality.
