A little reading to begin with

A SAMPLE FROM CHAPTER ONE

Compare the future choices from today, not the original loan advertisement. Identify the existing outstanding principal, current scheduled payment, remaining term and applicable rate conditions. Original principal and original duration do not describe what remains after years of repayments. Obtain the actual relevant figures through the legitimate lender process for a real comparison.

Distinguish a displayed balance from a current settlement amount. Depending on the agreement, settlement can include interest to a particular date and relevant charges or adjustments. Do not assume a balance screenshot is a quote to close the obligation. Ask what date and conditions apply to the settlement information, and keep it separate from the principal used in a teaching model.

Write what the proposed replacement changes: rate basis, term, payment, fees, security or amount borrowed. If it includes additional cash or consolidates another debt, the arrangements are not a simple like-for-like replacement. This guide does not advise on releasing equity or moving unsecured obligations into secured borrowing. Those require their own appropriate personal guidance.

Choose a common comparison date and state your reason. It might be two years from now for a fictional exercise. This horizon does not predict when you will move or settle a loan. It gives both scenarios the same endpoint so that lower payments cannot hide a larger remaining obligation. Keep all amounts in one currency and on a consistent cost basis.
