A little reading to begin with

A SAMPLE FROM CHAPTER ONE

Begin with an ordinary question: “What would you like me to help with?” The answer may be transport, remembering questions or simply being present. Do not assume that managing an appointment means speaking for the person throughout it. Ask whether they would like time alone with the professional.

Respect preferences about sharing information and involving other relatives. A family relationship does not automatically give access to every record or authority over a decision. If there is uncertainty about consent, capacity or a legal role, ask the relevant professional or service; this guide cannot determine it. Record the support requested in plain language and keep it open to change. The person may want more help at one appointment and less at another. A useful role is specific rather than unlimited.
