A little reading to begin with
A SAMPLE FROM CHAPTER ONEA caller may claim that a loved one needs money immediately. Do not rely on recognising the voice or seeing a familiar face on a screen. The FTC describes scams using cloned voices; the practical response is independent verification, not trying to become an expert at detecting tiny sound defects.
Pause the payment or information request. End the contact when appropriate and call the person through a number you already trust. If they do not answer, contact another known family member. Do not use a new number or link supplied by the caller as the verification route.
An actual emergency needs the appropriate emergency service, not a secrecy instruction from an unknown caller. If there is immediate danger, contact the emergency service where you are. Checking should fit the circumstances, but an unfamiliar demand for a rushed private payment is not made safe by a recognisable voice.
