A little reading to begin with

A SAMPLE FROM CHAPTER ONE

Begin with one practical situation you want to understand. You may need to know how to reach the room without stairs, whether instructions are spoken and demonstrated, or whether a support person can attend. State the participation question rather than giving your entire medical history. A clear request helps the provider identify the right person to answer.

Separate what you know from what you need to check. 'I use a wheelchair and need information about the route to the class room' describes a concrete access question. 'The building says accessible, so every room must work for me' makes an assumption that still needs testing. Avoid turning an unclear answer into either guaranteed suitability or guaranteed exclusion.

Choose what information you are comfortable sharing and with whom. A booking administrator may handle costs and attendance, while an instructor or designated access contact handles participation arrangements. Ask about the process before sending sensitive notes to a general group address. If clinical information is required, find the appropriate private route and professional role.

List the conditions that would affect your decision most. You do not need to inspect every feature before asking about the central barrier. A first conversation can concern one room, one route or one communication method. A personal access question should remain useful even if the provider's answer is no or uncertain: it tells you what needs clarification before you pay or travel.
